Trout Fishing - Island Park

Island Park is home to the world famous Henry’s Fork of the Snake River, the trophy trout fishery, Henry’s Lake, and Island Park Reservoir.

The Henry’s Fork has miles of quality fly fishing waters for rainbow and cutthroat trout. These waters include the famous Box Canyon and the Railroad Ranch in Harriman State Park.

Henry’s Lake boasts of record class brook, cutthroat, and rainbow/cutthroat hybrid trout. The state record brook trout, weighing 7 lbs. 1 oz., was caught here in 1978. Several brook trout weighing 4-5 pounds are caught each year. The rainbow/ cutthroat hybrid trout grow extremely large and many are caught each year that weigh from 7 lbs. to 12 lbs.

Island Park Reservoir also provides fishing for rainbow and rainbow/cutthroat hybrid trout. In addition kokanee salmon are also in the reservoir. The kokanee migrate up the Henry’s Fork to small breeding streams in late August and early September. They become brilliantly colored during this migration and are easy to see in the water.

Island Park’s location makes it a great home base for trout fishing. It is a short drive to the Madison and Gallatin rivers in southern Montana, the South Fork of the Snake River in Idaho, and the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park with its’ miles of rivers. It is within a two hour drive of the Missouri River in Three Forks, Montana or the Snake River near Jackson, Wyoming.
